Marie Dahl pair of goat fibula brooches - Ravengaard

Marie Dahl pair of goat fibula brooches

A fibula (think fancy brooch) based on a Swedish examples. This type of fibula showcases two goats flanking a “thunderstone”. A “thunderstone” is really a fossilized urchin but in the viking age it was thought that these stones was created by lightning. Since lightning couldn’t strike the same place twice it would make sense to carry a part of the lightning strike with you. The goats is therefore thought to be connected to thunder or more directly being depictions of Thors goat Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr.
